Thus, this study aimed to understand whether the reported benefits of compassion on motivation and mental health applied to undergraduate Psychology students, in comparison to undergraduate Business students. Participants were given the self-compassion scale, as well as the compassion for others scale (Pommier et al., 2019; Raes et al., 2011), as well as the PHQ-9 (Koneke et al., 2001) and the GAD-7 (Spitzer et al., 2006), as well as their degree choice and career aspirations. Scores on the PHQ (depression), as well as compassion for others, significantly differed by degree choice, with depression scores being higher for business students, but not career choice. This lends support for the ‘wounded healer’ hypothesis as to motivation for studying psychology, potentially having implications at university and in the workplace. An answer popular in both philosophy and folk psychology is that an intention supports action planning if directed towards the future and triggers the execution of its specified action if directed towards the present. This paper argues that this answer fails to capture how intention, as a mental state, transits into bodily movements that constitute or bring the action about with its specified side effects. Based on a recently proposed framework of the theory of intention – the Hierarchical Theory of Intention of just one kind – this paper develops a nuanced account of the relationship between intention and action, in which present-directedness is a necessary but insufficient criterion. Developing this account will also reinforce the advantage of the Hierarchical Theory over mainstream philosophical theories of intention that distinguish between intentions of two different kinds. This study conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews with Chinese parents (n=7) who satisfied the recruitment criteria. The findings discovered that parents’ decision was mostly influenced by how they perceive the difference between national education and international education systems’ capacity to fulfil their expectation towards the return of education. While the parent participants generally value the socio-cultural capital potentially brought by the international schools, the high cost of international education was less considered. Parents’ responses reveal a great diversity in their decision-making process and ways of comparison. Capital openness is defined as the extent to which a country allows the flow of financial capital across borders. We selected control variables regarding education levels and trade openness and employed the Newey-West estimation method. The results confirm the theory that capital openness has a posi- tive effect on inequality, the higher the financial globalization of a nation, the higher the inequality. Using a minute-level dataset, I separately analyse realised and implied volatility through Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression and instrumental variable (IV) techniques. I introduce Boolean and inverse logarithmic attack indicators, with the number of Palestinian deaths as an instrumental variable to establish causality. Results reveal a significant increase in volatility following high-magnitude attacks, particularly involving oil tankers, with volatility spikes typically peaking within the first day post-attack. Volatility decay is non-monotonic, indicating that market responses vary in intensity over time. The robustness of our IV model, evidenced by significant coefficients and exclusion restrictions, further supports causal findings. I discuss the policy implications, highlighting the stabilizing effects of a ceasefire on financial markets. I also acknowledge limitations in our dynamic modeling, suggesting the potential for improved accuracy with a GARCH model and additional instruments in future research.
