One policy approach to address this problem is to expand the supply of housing through new development. However, new development can often generate controversy among existing residents. This research aims to better understand resident objections against new development. A methodology was developed to collect objections from publicly available planning applications. In total, 1975 objections across 82 major housing planning applications were collected, all in the Bradford region. The objections were categorised into 31 issues and subsequently analysed for patterns and themes using statistical techniques. There were three key findings: first, that environmental issues are most important for residents; second, a small number of applications cause the majority of objections; third, the affluence of a wards impacts engagement in the planning process. The study contrasts the performance of WAEMU member states specifically Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal, Mali, and Burkina Faso with that of non-CFA West African countries, including Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Particular attention is paid to crucial sectors such as agriculture and textiles, which are significant contributors to regional income and employment. The methodology employed involves a panel data analysis covering the period from 2010 to 2025. This analysis utilizes data on export volumes, real effective exchange rates, and key macroeconomic indicators sourced from databases like UN Comtrade, IMF DOTS, and the World Bank. The quantitative findings are supplemented by qualitative insights derived from interviews and policy reports. The results suggest that WAEMU countries have experienced slower export growth and diminished price competitiveness in comparison to their non-CFA counterparts. The CFA franc appears to have restricted the capacity of WAEMU exporters to adapt to external economic fluctuations, particularly within price-sensitive industries. Concurrently, the stability provided by the CFA franc continues to be valuable for maintaining low inflation rates and fostering investor confidence. The paper advocates for WAEMU policymakers to consider adopting greater exchange rate flexibility or an adjusted peg as part of the proposed Eco currency framework. It also emphasizes that any monetary policy adjustments should be complemented by reforms aimed at enhancing trade and infrastructure. Since then, there are growing concerns about the future of the doctrine of “Responsibility to Protect” (R2P). This article engages with the literature surrounding R2P and provides an analysis of the concept from a postcolonial and feminist perspective. Using both theories as well as securitization theory, it also examines the discourse strategies used by the UN to legitimize the use of force against Gaddafi´s government. Among the strategies examined, the oversimplification of the conflict, the antagonization of Gaddafi, and the rape-as-a-tool-of-war discourse will be analysed. The paper concludes that R2P is not the apolitical tool it is argued to be. Rather, as Libya demonstrated, R2P embodies the “us vs the other” dichotomy and is used to reproduce Western values and ideology through paternalistic and colonial discourses that justify external intervention by rendering local agents incapable of protecting themselves. Humanitarian discourses are then argued to reinforce cultural and gendered stereotypes based on essentialist notions, which leads to the neglect of women´s agency, the perpetuation of cultural stereotypes regarding non-western people, a division between positive and negative masculinity, and the marginalization of certain collectives.
