              <text>How can we accurately detect and locate a modification on an RNA molecule using nanopore sequencing data? This is an open problem that requires ideas from both statistics and biology. Supervised by Professors Anastasia Papavasiliou and Jon Forster, I began by simulating the signal data from Oxford Nanopore devices, where a sliding window reads five bases on the mRNA chain at a time. Using R, we constructed a statistical framework which involves working with different distributions such as poisson, inverse gamma and the normal distribution to generate signal values. Then we analysed our signal values, performing hypothesis tests and calculating maximum likelihood scores in order to determine where modifications are likely to be on the mRNA chain. This year, after gaining valuable biological insight at the Laboratory of Immune Diversity in the German Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg, I have created a greedy search algorithm to maximise our likelihood score and detect RNA modifications from the signal data. To improve the accuracy, we included a posterior likelihood calculation into our score and I also coded a birth-death algorithm. Then, I tested both methods with multiple reads (signal lists) per mRNA type which proved to be more accurate and created interesting results!</text>

              <text>Cellulose is the most abundant natural polymer in the world, acting as the primary structural component in plant cell walls and key in processing several biomaterials. Cellulosic materials are sustainable alternatives to synthesised polymers such as plastics, with the potential to replace them in many sectors, such as textiles and packaging. To utilise cellulose effectively, we must understand how its structure changes under a variety of treatments and processes. Inspired by this notion, this project investigates how different drying methods affect the structure of cellulose extracted from tomatoes, using solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ssNMR), a spectroscopic technique that reveals the molecular structure without destroying the sample.</text>

              <text>Ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes are promising alternatives to platinum-based anticancer drugs due to their tunable photophysical properties and reversible DNA interactions. This study reports the synthesis, characterisation, and DNA-binding analysis of [Ru(dmbpy)₂(tpphz)]²⁺. The complex was successfully prepared and confirmed using 1H NMR, IR, UV-Vis, and mass spectrometry. UV-Vis spectra revealed characteristic MLCT bands near 450 nm, while DNA titrations showed hypochromism and red shifts, indicating intercalation. Luminescence studies demonstrated a ‘light-switch’ effect upon DNA addition, consistent with increased emission in the bound state. The binding constant (K_b ≈ 3.9 × 10⁵ M⁻¹) and low quantum yield (Φ ≈ 2%) suggest moderate affinity but promising photoactive potential. Overall, [Ru(dmbpy)₂(tpphz)]²⁺ exhibits characteristics desirable for further investigation as a potential photoactivated anticancer agent.</text>

              <text>Traditionally, academics have suggested that generating excess returns off timing the market, i.e. buying or selling financial products off frequent predictions requires maintaining an unreasonably high level of predictive accuracy. However, recent advancements in machine learning have motivated the adoption of predictive algorithms in financial markets. This highlights the importance of the question: How accurate do predictive algorithms have to be "useful"? To answer this, we study 2 problems related to the value of predictive accuracy in directional models for trading. We obtain results on the relationship between predictive accuracy and returns, and results on quantifying thresholds for when a predictive signal provides significant edge. </text>

              <text>The Multi-Adaptive Threshold Model is a system of equations that describe an action potential for a neuron cell. What is special about this model is that the spiking threshold, which is the threshold of potential required for a neuron cell to spike, adapts with time instead of being constant. The external input current of the neuron is also a stochastic process, and therefore the neuron potential also isn’t deterministic. This project looks at the theoretical properties of the system of equations, plots the system of equations  features in the spiking times of neuron cells.  </text>

              <text>This project demonstrates the sustainable synthesis of poly(n-butyl methacrylate) (PBMA) latexes via electrochemical Reversible Addition–Fragmentation Chain Transfer (eRAFT) polymerisation using reactive macromonomer surfactants. The incorporation of tBMA-co-BMA macromolecules provided effective covalent stabilisation, yielding PBMA with controlled molecular weight and low dispersity. These findings highlight eRAFT as a promising route towards greener, more stable methacrylate polymer production for industrial applications.</text>

              <text>Epstein-Barr virus is a ubiquitous human virus, with over 90% of adults worldwide being asymptomatic carriers. It is known to be associated with elevated risk of several specific cancers, including naso-pharyngeal carcinoma and Burkitt's lymphoma. Studying the mechanisms of how the virus causes cancer to develop gives insights on how to create more effective treatments for those cancers. This project explored the culturing of EBV+ cell lines, and the preliminary assays needed to conduct future research into anticancer treatments.</text>

              <text>This report contains our research output after participating in the 2025 Undergraduate Research Support Scheme (URSS) at the University of Warwick. The project was carried out with the Warwick Mathematics Institute (WMI) under the supervision of Helena Verrill. First, we introduce important concepts that we then use to study some of the properties of the stereographic projection. Using these properties, we investigate how this projection redistributes lattice points by extending Minkowski's theorem to sets on the sphere. We finish our project by developing and 3D printing models of the stereographic projection.</text>
