<text>Pharmaceutical pollution of river water through sewage spills, improper disposal and hospital wastewater discharge is an emerging problem in the UK. In this project, a low-cost, 3D printed electrochemical sensor was used to detect paracetamol (the most used over-the-counter medication in the UK) in river water. To develop an understanding of how the sensor works, the working electrode was imaged using both optical and scanning electron microscopy. The sensor was first trialled in high conductivity salt solutions, before moving on to tap water and river water spiked with 0.1 to 1 mM of paracetamol. Finally, a range of experiments using ferrocenylmethyl trimethylammonium hexafluorophosphate were run to study the reusability of the sensors, and how 3D printed electrodes compare to conventional macroelectrodes. Overall, 3D printed electrochemical sensors have huge potential in the analysis of water quality. These sensors cost less than £5 to produce, compared to typical electrochemical cells which cost approximately £500, and do not require any extensive scientific knowledge to use. In the final part of this project, a written method and accompanying video describing how to use these sensors were made, with the intention to invite local ‘Citizen Scientists’ to test the sensors themselves.</text>

This is an open problem that requires ideas from both statistics and biology. Supervised by Professors Anastasia Papavasiliou and Jon Forster, I began by simulating the signal data from Oxford Nanopore devices, where a sliding window reads five bases on the mRNA chain at a time. Using R, we constructed a statistical framework which involves working with different distributions such as poisson, inverse gamma and the normal distribution to generate signal values. Then we analysed our signal values, performing hypothesis tests and calculating maximum likelihood scores in order to determine where modifications are likely to be on the mRNA chain. This year, after gaining valuable biological insight at the Laboratory of Immune Diversity in the German Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg, I have created a greedy search algorithm to maximise our likelihood score and detect RNA modifications from the signal data. To improve the accuracy, we included a posterior likelihood calculation into our score and I also coded a birth-death algorithm. Then, I tested both methods with multiple reads (signal lists) per mRNA type which proved to be more accurate and created interesting results!</text>

<text>This paper examines how urban redevelopment transforms collective memory and cultural identity in heritage communities. Based on a qualitative case study of Zhang Yuan in Shanghai, a landmark of Haipai culture, I analyse interviews with former residents and organisational actors, field observations, and secondary archival data. My findings suggest that while physical facades were preserved, the displacement of residents and the commodification of culture produced symbolic rather than lived continuity. Organisations often prioritise commercial legitimacy over authentic engagement with local heritage. I contribute to the literature on cultural sustainability and organisational studies by conceptualising cultural transformation as an unfolding process and theorising how commercial-cultural tensions reshape the intergenerational transmission of memory and identity.</text>
