The focus is nonstop city pairs. I run a transparent difference-in-differences design that compares pre-merger overlap routes with non-overlap routes inside a linked-only sample. Regressions are passenger-weighted, include route and quarter fixed effects, and cluster standard errors by route. I also look at two predefined subsets: markets where the merging brands jointly held at least 50 to 70 percent of pre-merger passengers, and the top decile of routes by pre-merger passengers. In the baseline, Delta–Northwest overlap routes show fares about 2 percent lower with passenger volumes roughly unchanged. For American–US Airways, fares are flat to slightly lower and passengers are about 4 to 5 percent higher. In concentrated Delta–Northwest markets, fare effects turn positive and rise with the threshold, about +4, +7, and +9 percent at 50, 60, and 70 percent, with passenger declines at the higher cutoffs. For American–US Airways the pattern differs: fares fall by about 6.0, 6.7, and 5.6 percent, while passengers rise by about 11.8, 13.5, and 9.5 percent across the same thresholds. On the busiest trunk routes, Delta–Northwest shows a small fare decrease of roughly 2.6 percent with volumes flat, and American–US Airways shows no meaningful fare change paired with about 4.3 percent higher passengers. Read through standard unilateral-effects logic, the Delta–Northwest severe-subset results are consistent with internalization of undercutting where the two brands were closest substitutes before the merger. The American–US Airways results and the busiest-route findings point to network and schedule efficiencies that expand volumes without higher posted fares. Overall, there is no evidence of broad fare increases on nonstop overlap routes; concerns are most plausible in already concentrated Delta–Northwest markets, while efficiency gains appear more salient on trunk corridors. Based on a qualitative case study of Zhang Yuan in Shanghai, a landmark of Haipai culture, I analyse interviews with former residents and organisational actors, field observations, and secondary archival data. My findings suggest that while physical facades were preserved, the displacement of residents and the commodification of culture produced symbolic rather than lived continuity. Organisations often prioritise commercial legitimacy over authentic engagement with local heritage. I contribute to the literature on cultural sustainability and organisational studies by conceptualising cultural transformation as an unfolding process and theorising how commercial-cultural tensions reshape the intergenerational transmission of memory and identity. This is an open problem that requires ideas from both statistics and biology. Supervised by Professors Anastasia Papavasiliou and Jon Forster, I began by simulating the signal data from Oxford Nanopore devices, where a sliding window reads five bases on the mRNA chain at a time. Using R, we constructed a statistical framework which involves working with different distributions such as poisson, inverse gamma and the normal distribution to generate signal values. Then we analysed our signal values, performing hypothesis tests and calculating maximum likelihood scores in order to determine where modifications are likely to be on the mRNA chain. This year, after gaining valuable biological insight at the Laboratory of Immune Diversity in the German Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg, I have created a greedy search algorithm to maximise our likelihood score and detect RNA modifications from the signal data. To improve the accuracy, we included a posterior likelihood calculation into our score and I also coded a birth-death algorithm. Then, I tested both methods with multiple reads (signal lists) per mRNA type which proved to be more accurate and created interesting results! One policy approach to address this problem is to expand the supply of housing through new development. However, new development can often generate controversy among existing residents. This research aims to better understand resident objections against new development. A methodology was developed to collect objections from publicly available planning applications. In total, 1975 objections across 82 major housing planning applications were collected, all in the Bradford region. The objections were categorised into 31 issues and subsequently analysed for patterns and themes using statistical techniques. There were three key findings: first, that environmental issues are most important for residents; second, a small number of applications cause the majority of objections; third, the affluence of a wards impacts engagement in the planning process. Simultaneously, it has experienced a centralisation of its population into large cities. These trends are wreaking havoc on its dwindling rural communities, especially in Hokkaido, Japan’s large but sparsely populated northern island. Recent policy has encourged and incentivised remote work initiatives and growing numbers have been moving to rural areas, which offer significantly lower rents and lifestyle opportunities. Some of Hokkaido’s regional towns and cities are choosing to facilitate long- and short-stay remote workers by investing in local spaces and infrastructure and advertising their local attractions.
