Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance has resulted in $66.4 billion in costs annually, and over 1 million deaths per year, resulting in a global effort to produce more antimicrobial drugs for clinical use. New drugs need to be tested not only for their antimicrobial efficacy but their antibiofilm activity. Pomegranate molasses and vinegar extracts have shown promising results in MIC's, analysed by culture turbidity and optical density with Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus cultures. Minimum inhibitory concentrations were found at 3.13% and 6.25% respectively, when tested in synthetic wound fluid with pomegranate molasses and lower concentrations of 1.57% and 1.57% in same conditions with pomegranate vinegar. Colony counts indicated effective biofilm eradication in chronic wound models with a more than a 4-log10 reduction in the respective bacteria cultures.
