Abstract

The national identity of Britain has historically been linked to its centuries-old mission of imperial expansion. In 2025, ideologies of nationalism stemming from British imperialism are dangerously ever-present. This paper seeks to examine the ways in which notions of coloniality are perpetuated by 20th and 21st century children’s literature, using the case studies of the Chronicles of Narnia and Harry Potter series. The essay also utilises interviews with British students conducted by the researcher to aid in understanding the impacts of white nationalism, both in literature and in real life, upon non-white young adults.
