Title A name given to the resource Arts Academic Paper An academic paper Abstract The abstract of the paper This article seeks to understand the importance of identity in impacting the French East India Company by taking as its subject François Caron (1600-1673), a foreigner and one of the first directors of this fledgling company. Caron, as a protestant and former employee of the Dutch East India Company, provides a unique example as to how both religious and national identity permeated 17th century commerce and affected decisions both in Europe and Asia. In the case of the French East India Company, Caron provided some of the impetus within the company to hire a range of foreigners which contributed to a multi-confessional organisation. Identity, however, remained a key source of difference and in Caron’s case would lead to suspicions and accusations of impropriety from his French colleagues. This ties into the historiographical question of the principal-agent-problem and whether Caron acted in the company’s best interests as his loyalty came under scrutiny. Caron came to be heavily relied upon by both Jean-Baptiste Colbert and Louis XIV who invested Caron with an unquestionable authority that would have significant consequences for Caron’s climactic decision to establish a French presence on Ceylon in 1672. While research has linked the sexual exploitation of boys to experiences in local authority care (Lillywhite and Skidmore, 2006), young women remain exceedingly overrepresented within the commercial sex trade (Brown, 2019). Subsequently, this analysis will focus primarily on the influence of the care system on young women’s entry into this sector. Given the limited empirical research investigating the specific vulnerabilities that influence care-experienced women’s entry, a separate analysis for this gender-based issue is required (Coy, 2008; Coy, 2009). Through a literature review and the collection of primary data, this research project aimed to identify the key drivers behind 70% of women in the sex industry having histories in the care system. Three main aims were identified for this project: (i) To identify the key themes among care-experienced children that drive their entry into the sex industry and how they emerge, (ii) to understand how these recurring themes contribute to entry into the sexual marketplace, and (iii) to explore the extent to which these contributing factors are acknowledged by the care system and addressed through effective policy intervention. Core themes that emerged include childhood adversity, negative view of self, multiple placement moves, emotional insecurity, minimal safeguarding within care facilities, stigmatisation, and socio-economic disadvantage. Qualitative research methods, including primary interviews and questionnaires, have been conducted alongside a review of secondary data. This approach facilitated an in-depth analysis of the key themes identified, uncovering their significance and contribution to the extensive participation of care-experienced women in the sex industry. While immune mechanisms underlying RA are well established, emerging evidence highlights an important role for neuro-immune crosstalk in disease progression. In particular, mast cells and transient receptor potential (TRP) ion channels may contribute to inflammatory signalling within the synovium. This study aimed to genotype and characterise transgenic mouse models of RA to investigate the roles of mast cells and TRP channels, with a focus on TRPM2 and TRPM8. Wild-type, heterozygous, conditional knockout, and global knockout mice were analysed. Genotyping was performed using PCR and agarose gel electrophoresis to confirm genotype. Histological analysis of mouse knee joints was conducted using haematoxylin and eosin staining to assess tissue morphology, toluidine blue staining to identify mast cells, and immunostaining to detect TRP ion channel expression. Protein analysis was performed using ELISA to quantify inflammatory mediators, including IL-6, PGE₂, and Substance P, alongside Bradford assays to determine total protein content. PCR successfully confirmed the generation of transgenic mouse lines. Histological analysis revealed synovial inflammation and mast cell infiltration characteristic of RA, while immunostaining identified TRPM2 and TRPM8 expression within inflamed joints. TRPM2 knockout mice exhibited reduced inflammatory features compared to wild-type controls. ELISA confirmed the presence of key inflammatory mediators, supporting a mechanistic link between neuronal signalling and mast cell-driven inflammation. Collectively, these findings support a contributory role for mast cells and TRP ion channels in RA pathology and highlight their potential as therapeutic targets.
