<text>Ghana possesses over 1.9 million hectares of irrigable land, yet less than 3% is currently utilized, with agriculture remaining largely rainfed. This research explores the transformative potential of Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) in modernizing irrigation systems to address inefficiencies in energy use, water distribution, and equipment longevity. By integrating advanced motor control techniques and real-time systems using dSPACE MicroAutoBox III, the study demonstrates how VFDs can significantly reduce power consumption, mechanical stress, and over-irrigation. Mathematical modeling and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing validate the system’s performance under dynamic conditions. Results show up to 50% energy savings and 30% water conservation during partial load operations. The research recommends pilot deployments, technician training, and solar-VFD integration to support Ghana’s 2025 electrification goals. VFD technology offers a scalable, sustainable solution for enhancing agricultural productivity and resource efficiency across Ghana’s irrigation landscape.</text>

<text>This project builds upon the work of Henderson and Hobson (2013), which demonstrated the counterintuitive result that risk-averse agents,
seeking to maximise expected utility and possessing a timing option over when to sell an indivisible asset, may find it optimal to engage in risk increasing fair gambles. In this project, we extend the one-period binomial
model into a two-period model and explore a novel disaster model where a potential financial crisis may occur - while illustrating that the result still holds in these expanded scenarios. Our analysis broadens the applicability of the original insights and provides a robust foundation for understanding optimal decision-making strategies in a wider range of financial contexts. </text>

<text>Large Language Models (LLMs) achieve outstanding performance but are expensive to fine-tune due to their size. Parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT) methods like Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) address this by updating only small low-rank matrices while keeping pretrained weights frozen. This project explores LoRA and its variants—QLoRA, AdaLoRA, and LoRA-One—through theoretical analysis and experiments on the GLUE benchmark using T5-base. Results show that LoRA achieves near full fine-tuning performance with under 1% of trainable parameters. The study highlights LoRA’s efficiency–expressiveness trade-off and contributes to developing more scalable, adaptive fine-tuning strategies for large models.</text>

<text>Rural India continues to grapple with high school dropout rates despite decades of expanding school access. National statistics show that dropout rates climb dramatically at higher grade levels. While the primary‑school dropout rate is roughly 1.5%, the secondary dropout rate exceeds 12% and rises to around 17% in the latest UDISE+ data (Education Department, 2021; Education Department, 2020). The problem is multidimensional: poverty, distance to school, gender‑specific challenges such as menstruation, and the quality of school facilities all influence whether a child completes school. The following research project investigated how targeted donations (computers, tables, cameras, cycles, sanitary pads and similar resources) and school‑level facilities influence student attendance, retention, learning enjoyment, etc. in two rural schools in Maharashtra. A mixed-methods approach was used, combining surveys of 174 students and teachers with qualitative conversations with headmasters to understand local conditions and perceptions. Key findings show that school facilities have a multi-dimensional impact on students’ educational experiences. Improvements to sanitation and menstrual hygiene facilities most strongly enhanced attendance and wellbeing among girls, while bicycles reduced the strain of long commutes. Upgraded classrooms, libraries, and computer access improved motivation, enjoyment, and engagement across all grades, and students also perceived better-equipped environments as strengthening teaching quality and community participation. Overall, the findings demonstrate that donor-supported facilities complement government schemes by addressing both material and social barriers to schooling. Sustained investment in sanitation, transport, and learning infrastructure is therefore essential not only for reducing dropout but also for creating more inclusive and motivating learning environments in rural India.</text>
